Zim gets Burundi in AFCON 2013 draw

The draw for the Africa Cup of Nations 2013 was conducted by the Confederation of African Football in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea on Friday night, and Zimbabwe were given a fairly manageable draw when they were drawn against Burundi. South Africa qualify as hosts.

30 nations were involved in this initial draw, whose main purpose is to eliminate 16 nations and leave only 14 who will battle with those who are set to take part in the AFCON 2012 finals due to begin in January 2012 in Equatorial and Gabon.

Four of the lowest ranked 30 nations among those who failed to qualify for the 2012 finals, will have to take part in Preliminary 1, where only two nations can qualify and join the rest of the 26 higher ranked nations in Preliminary Round 2.

As CAF seeks a curtailed process of qualification for 2013 during this transitional stage which sees the ACON switching from being hosted during even to odd years, the 28 nations in preliminary round 1 will also directly elimiate each other.

The 14 successful nations after preliminary round 2 will battle with the 16 nations, fresh from the AFCON finals 2012 during the third quarter of 2012, to leave out only 15 nations who will qualify for South Africa 2013.

Results of the draw

Preliminary Round 1 of the 4-lowest ranked nations

Seychelles v Swaziland (Win 1/2)

Sao Tome v Lesotho (Win 3/4)

Preliminary Round 2

Ethiopia v Benin; Rwanda v Nigeria; Congo v Uganda; Burundi v Zimbabwe; Algeria v Gambia; Kenya v Togo; Win3/4 v Sierra Leone; Guinea Bissau v Cameroon; Chad v Malawi; Win 1/2 v DR Congo; Tanzania v Mozambique; Central African Republic v Egypt; Madagascar v Cape Verde; Liberia v Namibia
