Bafana/ Warriors friendly set for Rufaro

Nyadombo deserves a call to the Warriors team to play a friendly against Bafana

The high profile friendly match, clearly Southern Africa's biggest derby between South Africa's Bafana Bafana and Zimbabwe's Warriors will be played at Rufaro Stadium on Tuesday 15 November, authorities have revealed.

Dubbed in Zimbabwean media as the battle of Limpopo, the match appeared to have been hanging in the balance until Safa confirmed that the match will be taking place, exactly three days after Bafana lock horns with Africa's top ranked nation Ivory Coast in the annual Nelson Mandela Challenge Cup.

“We are very excited at having two great opponents inside three days. This should give Bafana Bafana head coach Pitso Mosimane and the boys an ideal workout and keep them in top condition,” said Safa CEO Robin Petersen.

“The Zimbabwe encounter should be an interesting game taking into consideration that most players in the Zimbabwe National team ply their trade in the Absa Premiership,” added Petersen.

The match will kick-off at 19h30.

Both teams have not indicated the players to be called for duty. South Africa will no doubt call their strongest squad as the team is expected to battle against the likes of Didier Drogba, Gervinho, Yaya and Kolo Toure in an earlier match in Port Elizabeth.

The same squad for Bafana is expected to do duty with Zimbabwe on 15 November.

Norman Mapeza is likely to call a by and large unchanged squad given the time this match has been confirmed. Zimbabwe is likely to rely on their South African contingent for this friendly match.

Mapeza will be best advised to give a chance to other players who have done very well for their respective clubs in Europe and South Africa.

Such players who have raised their hands for selection through consistent perfomances at club level include the Amazulu pair of Carlington Nyadombo and Ramson Zhuwawo. The arrival of new coach Palmgreen at Usuthu has just confirmed what every neutral observer had seen before, that there is quality in that Amazulu team.

Players such as Zhuwawo have shone like a beacon in the middle of the park and the former Zimbabwe Footballer of the Year deserves a chance in the national team.

Zhuwawo was voted man-of the-match in Amazulu's 2-0 win against Bloemfontein Celtic at the World Cup venue, the Moses Mabhida Stadium. The former Gunners midfielder created both goals and was clearly the best player on view.

It is mind-boggling why Mapeza continues to ignore players like Zhuwawo who play week in and week while preferring to give a call to midfielders like Willard Katsande who sometimes never features even on the substitutes' bench at Kaizer Chiefs.

Carlington Nyadombo is certainly a good option for Mapeza in the heart of defence. The defender has been the leader of the central defence at Amazulu, and his aerial ability, his good reading of the game and ripe age makes him a perfect choice for sot in the heart of the Warriors' defence.

Time has come for Mapeza to realise that captain Method Mwanjali is better suited for either the midfield holding position or as a right back where the team can benefit from his ability to attack and make those incise passes.

Other players whom Mapeza may need to recall to the national team include Noel Kaseke who is playing again after injuries set-back. If Kingston Nkatha of Black Leopards and Mike Temwanjira of FC Vaslui in Romania were not injured, Mapeza should have called them and give them a chance to showcase what they can offer to the nation.

The team's over reliance on Knowledge Musona for goals in the last campaign is cause for concern. There is need to audition another goal poacher in the Warriors colours.
