Weekend Round-up of Zim stars in foreign leagues

Ramson Zhuwawo,  and Nyasha Mushekwi put on solid displays in their respective teams' wins over the weekend, and capped their performances with man-of-the-match and a brace respectively, in a weekend when most Zimbabwean players playing abroad suffered defeats in league matches.

South Africa's ABSA Premiership

Former Zimbabwe Footballer of the Year Zhuwawo, had a clearly outstanding performance, creating both Amazulu's goals in a 2-0 home victory over Bloemfontein Celtic in a League match at the world class Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Zhuwawo was fittingly named Man-of-the-match on the day when he bossed-around the central midfield, showing his class as both a destroyer and a spplier of clean passes. If there was an doubt to Zhuwawo's class, Saturday afternoon must have put all the doubts to rest. The former Gunners' player has been the reason for Amazulu's recent rise to form, quietly doing his work in the heart of midfield.

His compatriot Carlington Nyadombo put on a fine display at the back and thwarted most of Celtic's moves. Another Zimbabwean keeper and captain Tapuwa Kapini retured to starting eleven. Despite making some very good good saves towars the end of the match, the Amazulu captain and Warriors' goalminder started off hesitantly and fumbled a few shots which should have been characteristic first time catches for the veteran goalminder.

Another fine display by a Zimbabwean in the ABSA premiership came from Warriors striker Nyasha Mushekwi who got a rare start this season under Johan Neeskens, and rewarded the coach's faith by scoring a brace in a 5-1 demolition of the out-of-sorts Black Leopards under the cartakership of Sunday Chidzambwa's who reportedly resigned as head coach following last weekend's cup defeat at the hands of Orlando Pirates. Apparently the former Warriors coach was asked to stand-in for new coach.

Mushwekwi first outpaced the Leopards defence and slotted past a diving Postnet Omony, before out-jumping the Leopards defence to powerfully head-in his second goal of the day. Method Mwanjali who captains Downs had a faairly good game, and his defence did not look troubled at all by Lidoda Duvha.

Energy Murambadoro will feel badly exposed by his defence who allowed log leaders Supersport space inside the box to score in the dying stages of the match to end up on a 0-1 losing side at home. Before that the former CAPS United and Israeli side Bnei Saknin had played brilliantly denying the former champions' strikers on numerous occasions.

Of the five Zimbabweans on Kaizer Chiefs' books, only regulars  gritty midfield-general Tinashe Nengomasha, central defender Thomas Sweswe and left back Jimmy Jambo featured for the Naturena-club as they laboured to a 1-0 victory over visiting Platinum Stars at the Peter Mokaba Stadium. Stars kept their Zimbabwean striker Terrence Mandaza on the bench for the entire match. The former Township Rollers striker, who finished his final season in Botswana as that country's Footballer of the Season and Golden Boot winner, showed flashes of brilliance when setting up the winning goal in Stars' Telkom Cup triumph over Amakhosi last week.

Earlier on Friday, Moroka Swallows beat battling Ajax Cape Town 3-2 at the Dobsonville Stadium to temporarily occupy pole position of the PSL log. Veteran striker Siyabonga Nomvete scored twice, and George Nergadze's goal sandwiched each of the former Bafana Bafana star's goals.

Khama Billiat scored one of Ajax's goals, while sparkling Zimbabwean attacking midfielder Oscar Machapa came on for Joseph Makhanya in the second half. Warriors defender Gilbert Mapemba has been sitting on the bench for much of this season after holding on a starting berth for a few matches after signing. It is very surprising why Mapemba, who has appeared out-of-sorts in a Swallows jersey even during the few games he started for the Dube Birds, has been able to keep his place in the Warriors ahead of fit-again Cyprus-based Noel Kaseke or Tapiwa Khumbuyani of CAPS.

Enterprising and skillful Matthew Rusike was a late second half substitute as his team Jomo Cosmos failed to punish Orlando Pirates after taking an early lead. The Bucs needed a penalty to draw level before stealing a 2-1 victory in the 87th minute. Another Zimbabwean Taonga Dondo was an unused substitute for Cosmos.

France's Ligue 2

Zimbabwe Warriors' most influential midfielder in the last AFCON campaign Ovidy Karuru was a 90th minute for US Bolougne in their 0-1 loss away to Le Mans in a Ligue 2 match on Saturday. Two matches earlier, Karuru was put on an inspired show as he grabbed two goals in his team's 4-1 demolition of top 5 team Sedan. Karuru has now scored 3 goals in 8 appearances for Bolougne.

Germany's Bundesliga

Warriors key striker Knowledge Musona's TSG 1899 Hoffenheim's poor away record continued as they suffered 3-1 defeat away at Schalke 04 on Saturday. The defeat came hard on the heels of a morale-boosting Geramn Cup victory for Hoffenheim in which Musona opened his Bundeslia goal account in his first start ever since joining Hoffenheim this season. On Saturday the Smilling Assasin was an unused substitute.

Belgium's Pro-League

Germinal Beerschot suffered a narrow 3-2 defeat away at OH Leuven, but Vusa Nyoni's Belgian topflight outfit remained 9th on the log, with 14 points after 12 matches. The Warriors left back continues to enjoy great form and a starting berth at Beerschot. Elsewhere, Honour Gombami's Cercle Brugge enjoy great form and are currently sitting on 3rd position on the log with 23 points after forcing a 1-1 draw away at Zulte-Waregem  also on Saturday.

Russian Premier League

Musa Mnguni's Terek Grozny are completely safe from relegation despite losing 2-1 away at Krylya Sovetov on Sunday. Mnguni is currently enjoying game time and has been starting and finishing most of the matches for Grozny of late. He played for the entire 90 minutes on Sunday. His physical presence, pace and aerial ability always wins him favours from coaches, and he was full of running on Sunday, fashioning out a few chances for his team. Grozny remain on 28 points after 28 matches, with a match to go.

Romania's Liga 1

FC Vaslui cruised to a 4-0 victory over Târgu Mureþ  even without their injured chief striker Mike Temwanjira. The former CAPS United player has been on the injury list for the past three matches. Before his injury, Mbozha has been in great form, scoring for his club in the Liga 1 and Europa League this season.

Cypriot Division 1

Noel Kaseke has been playing really well for champions Omonia Nicosia, and his side beat Olympiakos 2-0 last Saturday, and a week before, the Warriors defender scored a 75th minute goal in a 2-0 win over AEK Larnaca.

Danish Superliga

Quincy Antipas' SønderjyskE will face Midtjylland in a Monday night fixture in the Danish Superliga. SønderjyskE are currently lying 9th on a 12 team league log, and really need to begin picking up all the points they can get on the road to avoid finding themselves in the murky waters of relegation.

England's League Two

Plymouth Argyle have welcomed back star defender Onismor Bhasera's return from a long lay-off due to injury, but their fortunes are yet to change in the league. They suffered yet another defeat when they lost 2-1 to Cheltenham Town on Saturday. Bhasera played the entire 90 minutes, and was yellow carded i the 72nd minute for rough play. Plymouth are languishing at the foot of the table.
