Sadomba wins Africa's CL Golden boot

Sadomba is Africa"s King of goals for 2011!

Al-Hilal's Zimbabwean forward Edward Sadomba has finally landed the Golden Boot for Africa's prestigious Club football competition, the CAF Champions League, after none of his closest rivals managed to catch up with his 7 goals scored in the tournament.

Sadomba, whose seven goals helped Al-Hilal of Sudan to a semi-final spot in the Champions League, had to wait for several weeks with abated breath, hoping that close rivals for the award, Wydad Casablanca's duo of Mouhssine Iajour and Fabrice Ondama, would not add to their five goals in the competition.

The two Moroccans, failed to overtake Sadomba as their club emerged from the CAF Champions League final's two legs against Esperance of Tunisia without scoring a single goal. Esperance eventually clinched the 2011 title courtesy of a lone 2nd leg goal netted by Ghanaian defender Harrison Afful who scored mid-way through the first half.

Esperance provided other competitors for the competition's top goal scorer's award, with skipper Oussama Darragi and Yannick Ndjeunk weighing in with four goals apiece.

At the end of the marathon Champions League, it was the Zimbabwean Sadomba who will walk away with the coveted individual award, after scoring 7 goals in 12 matches for Al-Hilal in the competition.

'Duduza' now needs to convert his rich goal scoring vein at club and inter-club competition level to the Zimbabwe Warriors team (national soccer team), where he was an important squad member for the failed 2012 AFCON campaign, in which the speed-merchant failed to score despite playing superbly in the matches he featured for the Warriors.

For his great performances  in Africa, Sadomba has also been short-listed for the African Player of 2011 award, an individual accolade reserved for players who played in African competitions such as the CAF Champions League, the Confederation Cup, the CHAN and the AFCON.

Sadomba is the first Zimbabwean player to be short-listed for the African Player of the Year award. He also becomes the first Zimbabwean to win the Golden Boot award in Africa.

The Al-Hilal talisman is a  former Dynamos player. The Zimbabwean giants are considered one of the strongest African football clubs, and have taken part in the Champions League more times than any Zimbabwean club.

Sadomba madehis name while playing for Dynamos, was snapped up by Bidvest Wits of South Africa during the 2008/2009 season, and was immediately loaned out to Liga Muculmana of Mozambique, before being sold to Al-Hilal in 2010 after an initialloan spell towards the second half of 2009.

Duduza will look back and realise that it was a blessing in disguise that he never got to play for Wits in the ABSA premiership of South Africa, and that he landed up at Al-Hilal. The Sudanese giants, perennial participantsin Africa's premier Club competition, have offered the Zimbabwean a chance to shine and be noticed by the whole world.
