Bafana unlucky to draw with Ivory Coast

South Africa's senior national soccer team,Bafana Bafana were unlucky to come out of the Nelson Mandela Challenge Cup clash against Africa's No.1 ranked team Ivory Coast with a share of spoils after matching the mega stars pound for pound, and skill for skill.

In an annual Challenge Cup played to honour apartheid struggle hero and veteran statesman Nelson Mandela, Bafana were very unlucky to fall behind after substitute defender Siboniso Gaxa unfortunately mistimed his header and conceded an own goal.

Up to that point in the first half, Bafana had had clearer chances of the two sides, having matched Ivory Coast who had brought to Port Elizabeth, mega stars like Yaya and Kolo Toure of Manchester City, currently leading the Barclays Premiership log in England, Gervinho of Arsenal, Spain-based Didier Zokora, Chelsea's Solomon Kalou, among other big name players.

Katlego Mphela, who of late has endured a love-hate relationship with Bafana fans, had to put up with a torrent of abuse from the fans who wanted him substituted, but that was before he turned hero in the second half with a thunderous equaliser from a free-kick.

The end result was a 1-1 draw, but South Africa deserved much more than a draw and Ivory Coast should be content with a share of spoils.

At the end the two sides had to share the Mandela Challenge trophy.

Now South Africa have to prepare for a Southern Africa derby against Zimbabwe in Harare.

The Zimbabweans will not take kindly to the news that Pitso Mosimane has decided to rest his regulars such as Siphiwe Tshabalala, Kagisho Dikgcoi, Steven Pienaar, Anele Ngcongca, Siyabonga Sangweni, Tshepo Masilela, and take some untested youngsters to Harare.

South Africa's northern neighbours will feel that it might have been better for them to have engaged other opponents such as Zambia or even Botswana who were going to bring a full strength squad.
