Dynamos' Champions League/Confed Cup dilemma

[Posted 21 Nov 2011]
[By Brighton Mupangavanhu]
To be or not to be, thats the question. Champions League or Confed Cup? Decision moment.

Just a few hours after clinching their 18th league title in Zimbabwe, and with it a ticket to participate in the 2012 CAF Champions League, Dynamos are reportedly having second thoughts, and appear considering the lure of taking part in the Confederations Cup.

Dynamos are due to contest the final of the richest ever knockout competition in Zimbabwe, the Mbada Diamonds Cup, sponsored to the tune of US$1 million by diamond mining giants Mbada Diamonds.

Winners of the Mbada Diamonds cup are guaranteed $150 000 worth of sponsorship to take part in the Confederations Cup.

The sponsorship includes payment of all airfares and hotel accommodation, a huge incentive for usually cash-strapped local teams who have often struggled to raise money even for basic things such as  airfares when taking part in the African Safari.

The lure of participating in the CAF Confederations Cup for Dynamos, perennial travellers in Africa, is therefore understandable from a financial point of view.

On Sunday, Dynamos Football Club Chairperson Kenny Mubaiwa opened up about the dilemma his club finds itself in.

"We will have to make a quick decision this week," Dynamos chairman Kenny Mubaiwa told BBC Sport.

"Our number one choice is the Champions League, but our coffers are empty and we have to find a sponsor.

"We need a company to sponsor us - we've tried getting sponsorship from government before, but it doesn't work.

"So we will have to sit down and discuss as a club, because we will automatically have a sponsor in the Confederation Cup."

Unless Delta Beverages, sponsors of the league this year through their Castle Lager brand emulates the move by the Mbada Diamonds Cup sponsors, and choose to finance Dynamos' participation in the Champions League, then the league winners might find themselves opting for the less prestigious Confed Cup, with all expenses paid for.
