UEFA C/L: Barca win thriller, APOEL qualify for last 16

On an action packed Wednesday in the UEFA Champions League, Barcelona travelled to Italy and thoroughly enjoyed a winning a 3-2 thriller against AC Milan at the San Siro. Little known Cypriot club APOEL Nocosia made history by becming the first club from Cyprus to qualify for the last 16.

AC Milan 2-3 Barcelona

Barca scored an unlikely 3-2 victory away from home at the San Siro in Group H. The home team Milan desperately needed a victory to catch up with the Spanish champions and defedning European champions who were two points ahead before Wednesday game.

Their desperation for a result made them jittery at the beginning and Barca capitalised on that. Milan's Mark Van Bommel turned Seydou Keita's teasing cross after he was beautifully picked up by Lionel Messi into his own net for Barca's first.

Milan then hit back with Zlatan Ibrahimovic six minutes later to begin to a see-saw battle, with the striker scoring against his old team.

After half an hour had gone by, Messi scored from a penalty that never looked like it was deserved after it appeared like Xavi benefited from faking a foul in the box.

Kevin Prince-Boateng then scored the match's most beautiful goal. He sold a cute dummy to his marker, then flicked in over Eric Abidal in a swift movement before slotting the ball past a bemused Victor Valdes for Milan's second equaliser.

Xavi then put the icing on the cake in a hugely exciting match after he arrived at the end of cheeky threaded pass from Barca's little magician Messi and scored the match's final goal to give Barca a 3-2 lead, and with that goal came qualification ito the last 16.

Zenit St Petersburg 0-0 APOEL Nicosia

Despite dominating the match from start to finish, the Russian club Zenit failed to turn their dominance and ball possession into goals and goalless result gave  the Cypriot club passage to the last 16 as the top team in Group G with 9 points. APOEL are the first Cypriot club to qualify for the last 16.

Bayer Leverkusen 2-1 Chelsea

The English giants Chelsea stuutered in their campaign when they lost 2-1 to Bayer Leverkusen in Germany and passed on the opportunity to qualify with a game to spare. The Blues now need to win their final match against Valencia who thrashed Genk 7-0 on the same night on Wednesday to level points with Chelsea at 8. The next fixture between the two giants is a tough call at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday 6 December. That match is a must win for either side, even though it looks like a draw might be to Valencia's advantage according to the rules of the competition.
