Dynamos opt for CAF Champions League

Dynamos opt for CAF Champions League

After many days on indecision, new Zimbabwe Champions have finally decided that they will take part in the CAF Champions League in 2012, and not the Confederations Cup which has guaranteed sponsorship from Mbada Diamonds.

Dynamos were placed in a valley of indecision after winning the Mbada Diamonds Cup last Sunday.

After many sojourneys in Africa in the Champions League with meagre resources where the country's largest team on may occasions almost failed to fulfill fixtures due to financial difficulties, deMbare were tempted by the $150 000 offered by sponsors of Mbada Diamonds Cup and almost opted for the less prestigious competition.

Following a club executive meeting yesterday, Dynamos resolved to take part in the Champions League despite financial uncertainties, chairman Kenny Mubaiwa said.

“We met as management to deliberate on the issue. We were weighing up options because we do not have money to participate in Africa,” said Mubaiwa.

“Initially, we wanted to take part in the CAF Cup where we are guaranteed financial support but after our meeting, we agreed that as champions it was important for us to participate in the African Champions League even though we do not have money.

“So this is where we stand regarding which tournament to take part in,” the Dynamos supremo added.

It is not yet clear if Dynamos have been promised sponsorship in the Champions League by any other company in the country. Delta Beverages have already indicated that they will not be able to sponsor the team in Africa.

The other Champions League participants from Zimbabwe (who have two slots in the competition), league runners-up FC Platinum, do not seem to have any financial challenges to talk about.

Given the strengths and current form of the two clubs, Zimbabwe can be assured of good representation in the Champions League next year.
