Rwanda recover to beat Djibouti

The Amavubi of Rwanda, who have already choked two victories against stronger nations in the on-going Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup, Tanzania and Zimbabwe, needed a hattrick from substitute Olivier Karekezi to defeat the brave Djibouti 5-2 in Dar-es-Salam on Friday.

Djibouti were on the verge of a sensational upset at the Cecafa tournament when they took a 2-1 lead through goals from Ahmed Hassan whose first half goals gave the  whipping boys of Group B some hope of ending their campaign with at least a victory.

Captain Karekezi was then introduced in the second half and within eight minutes he had banged in three goals to deny Djibouti what would have become a famous win for them.

Rwanda have now completed their three group games with a 100% record, and sit pretty on top ahead of giants like Zimbabwe.

The Warriors are due to meet hosts Tanzania in a match the visitiors have to win at all costs to progress to the quarter-finals.

The Southern Africans were hit by a bout of diarrhoea that struck the camp earlier this week, and that outbreak has been blamed for their poor performance against the Amavubi who cashed in on the camp problems of their opponents, triumphing over their more fancied opponents 2-0 on Tuesday.

Zimbabwe will welcome back Eric Mudzingwa to the starting line-up after the talented midfielder-cum defender missed the embarrasing defeat against Amavubi on Tuesday.

The match will kick-off at 5pm Zimbabwean time and will be broadcast live on Supersport 9 channel.
