Pirates out-muscle Supersport

ABSA Premiership defending champions Orlando Pirates completely asserted their authority and out-muscled former champions Supersport United at Orlando Stadium on Saturday night, beating 3-0 to hand them their first defeat in the league this season.

Goals from in-form Benni McCarthy in the 21th minute (from the penalty), Isaac Chansa in the 31st  minute and a Ndumsio Mabena 3rd in the 48th minute saw the Bucs swing themselves back into the championship race after many weeks of indifferent form.

The win brought Pirates into fifth position ahead of Kaizer Chiefs on goal difference, probably for only 24 hours before the Mamemlodi Sundowns/ Chiefs match which was due to be played at Lucas Moripe Stadim on Sunday.

Both teams appeared geared to give fans a good match , and action swubn from end to end at Orlando Stadium, until an unfortunate handball by Zambian defender Davis Nkausu, who appeared to have been harshly penalised for what appeared like a ball to hand situation.

Up stepopeed veteran McCarthy to send young keeper Ronwen Williams the wrong way.

The former Bafana Bafana star was back in the thick of things as he set up up Chansa to add a second  after half an hour.

It was former Supersport United winger Daine Klate who provided a killer cross that was put away by Mabena in the 48th minute.

United never gave up and tried to restore parity, but it was always going to be difficult to rise up from a 0-3 deficit against Pirates in their own backyard.

Atusaye Nyondo tried to get a goal for United in the 74th minute, but his pile-driver was saved by Moneeb Josephs.

McCarthy was duly voted man-of-the-match at the end of the match for outstanding performance.
