Sweswe"s 1st PSL goal gives Chiefs win over "Downs

Zimbabwe international Thomas Langu Sweswe scored his first ever ABSA Premier Soccer League goal which helped Kaizer Chiefs to a crucial victory over Mamelodi Sundowns at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Sunday in a fiery contest.

The match had been billed as top of the drawer encounter, and it indeed live up to its billing before the match, as fans witnessed a ding-dong battle, with the teams only seperated by a lone Sweswe goal in the 12th minute.

Bafana star Siphiwe Tshabalala delivered an inviting cross, and Sweswe, who always lurks in goal during set-pieces was finally rewarded for all his efforts over the past two years. It was 1-0 up for Amakhosi in the 12th minute.

Sundowns needed a good response and they did, with Elias Pelembe, Tsholofelo "Teko" Modise and Nyasha Mushekwi troubling and teasing the Chiefs defence, yet the defence at times, but more importantly Arthur Bartman stood between them and an equaliser.

Bartman denied Mushekwi, after last year's runner up riggled his way past mesmerised defenders only for the Chiefs seond choice goalkeeper to heroically throw himself at hime to deny him a goal.

The Amakhosi minder was to save his team again in the 32nd minute to thwart Modise's thunderous strike from a distance.

Chiefs did have their moments to add onto their lone goal, with Lehlohonolo Majoro and Bernard Parker coming close in the second half, but Wayne Sandilands c ame to Downs' rescue.

Vladimir Vermezovic showed guts by throwing rookie Lincoln Zvasiya into the heart of defence in such a crucial match, and the Zimbabwe Under 23 defender responded well with a performance worth noting on his debut for Chiefs.

In the other matches played on Sunday, Ajax Cape Town handed visiting Bloemfontein Celtic a 2-0 defeat with goals from deender Mattheew Booth and George Maluleka.

Amazulu and Maritzburg United played to 0-0 draw in a KZN derby in Durban.

On Saturday, Moroka Swallows came from a goal down to thump Black Leopards 4-1 in Johannesburg. Jomo Cosmos picked up their first three points in the league this season with a 2-1 victory over fellow Rustenburg-based club Platinum Stars with goals from Siyabonga Nhlapo and Ousmanne Bethe. Terrence Mandaza scored a face-saver for Stars.

Free State Stars continued their fairytale story in the league with a convincing 2-0 win over Santos with goals from Edward Mnqele and Kennedy Mweene.

At Bidvest Wits Stadium, the second-string home side surrendered a healthy 2-0 first half lead to draw 2-2 with visiting Golden Arrows. Sifiso Vilakazi scored twice for Wits, while Thamsanqa Gabuza and Collins Mbesuma replied for Arrows.
