Uganda to play Zimbabwe in Cecafa quarters

The organisers of the CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup currently underway in Tanzania have concluded the quarter-finals pairing for this year following the end of the group stages on Saturday.

The Cranes of Uganda will meet the unopredictable developmental side of Zimbabwe in one of the big matches of the quarter-final stages.

Zimbabwe qualified as second best team from Group A after defeating Tanzania and Djibouti but losing to Rwanda, while Uganda also lost once to Group B winners Burundi, and defeated  Zanzibar and Somalia.

Coach Norman Mapeza surprisingly insisted that his target for his developmental side was to reach the last eight which the team of rookies has managed to achieved.

Given the world ranking of Zimbabwe, much is expected of the Warriors in this tournament, whether it is the 'B' side or 'C' side playing.

Mapeza is smart enough to realise that an defeat will dent the chances of improving rankings. Already Zimbabwe have lost to a lower ranking nation Rwanda, and the best that Mapeza and his squad should hope for are victories until the end of the tournament.

Zimbabwe sent a developmental side after the contry's two main clubs in the past two two seasons, Dynamos and Motor Action failed to contribute players given their Mbada Cup final commitments before the commencement of the Cecafa tourney.

Organisers of the tournament will be pleased with the qualaification home teams Tanzania and Zanzibar because stadiums will be kept filled up if  any of the two progress to the finals.

Quarter-finals pairings and dates

Monday:

Burundi v Sudan, 2pm

Rwanda v Zanzibar, 4pm

Tuesday

Uganda v Zimbabwe, 2pm

Malawi v Tanzania, 4pm
