Pirates" sweet revenge on Wits in Telkom Cup win

South  Africa's Soweto giants Orlando Pirates avenged the 3-1 league loss they suffered against Bidvest Wits two weeks ago when they bounced back from that humiliating defeat to beat the Clever Boys by a similar  score-line in the final of the prestigious Telkom Cup for 2011 played at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday night..

Pirates scored as early as the 3rd minute when veteran striker Benni  McCarthy showed his class with a cheeky pass, with Thulasizwe Mbuyane appearing at the end of the lovely play involving Daine Klate, to easily score past a frustrated Energy Murambadoro.

From that moment,it was the young Wits team that showed their class in knocking the ball around, but the Bucs were content with sitting back and only make calculated forays into the Clever Boys' half.

As Wits poured forward in search of an equaliser,Pirates  almost caught them in sixes and sevens at the back in the 11th minute, but an exposed Murambadoro, though he was rounded off by Ndumiso Mabena, managed to drive the striker to a tight angle from where he agonisingly missed.

In the 35th minute, Murambadoro again succeeded in  pushing McCarthy to a tight corner and another chance went missing. Wits were leaving quite dangerously for a team chasing the game, but Roger De Sa's men almost got their chance to level matters when Sifiso Vilakazi's header narrowly missed Moneeb Josephs' upright left pole.

Wits returned  from the break with a clear intent to convert their superior ball possession into at least a goal, and in the 65th minute, the industrious Sifiso Myeni beat Josephs on the near post with a hard low shot that went in through Slim Cat's legs to level scores 1-1.

Disappointingly for De Sa, it took Pirates just seven minutes to get back ahead, when poor marking on the left channel allowed Daine Klate time to turn his marker easily, and beat Murambadoro with a thunderous low shot.

Moments later,it looked all-over for Wits when subsitute Tlou Segolela tormented the Students' defence before squaring for Isaac Chansa who had space and time to beat Murambadoro all systems out in the 16 yard box for Bucs' third of the night.

Pirates had appeared seven times in the Telkom Cup final and the title had proved elusive until last night.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday, Telkom Cup sponsors will announce winners of the Goalkeeper of the year, Player of the tournament, Defender and Striker of the tournament awards.
