PSG names Ancelotti as new coach

French Ligue 1 Club Paris Saint Germain have named former Chelsea and AC Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti as new coach for the club, replacing Antoine Kombouare.

The appointment of the 52-year old Italian was announced at a press conference at Parc des Princes stadium on Friday, just a few hours after the club announced that Kombouare  had been relieved of his duties as head coach.

The sacking of Kombouare was surprising from an observer's view point given the efforts he had made to take the club to the top of the French Ligue 1 this season.

PSG announced the sacking of 48-year old Kombouare, without giving concrete reasons as to the reasons for his dismissal, at a time when the club is atop of Ligue 1.

"After two years in which he served with passion as PSG coach, Antoine Kombouare has left as of this date.

"PSG would like to thank him for the professionalism he has shown throughout his work and expresses its best wishes for his success in his new endeavours, " the club announced in a statement.

Even though reasons have not been given, the real reason is that the new owners of the club, Qatar Sports Investments, who bought the club in the summer, have bigger dreams for the French club and they just do not see modest Kombouare fitting into their high but achievable dreams of making PSG a world class club and world beater.

Former AC Milan and Chelsea coach Ancelotti is seen as the man to fit the new profile of the club to take it where the new owners want to see the club in the next couple of years.

This is consistent with the promise of the club president Nasser Al-Khelaifi "to make the club a great team and a strong brand on the international scene".

In Ancelotti, Al-Khelaifi has a coach whom he believes has the international stature and profile to take PSG forward, having won league titles in Italy with AC Milan and two Champions League titles at the same club during his spell in his motherland, Italy.

Thereafter, Ancelotti left for the Barclays Premiership in England to join Chelsea with whom he was to win a double of a league and Cup before finishing second the following season, leading to his shock dismissal by success hungry Roman Abramovich.
