Tunisa hold Ctalonia in Afcon preps

Tunisia played gallantly to a goalless draw against Barcelona dominated Catalonia in an Africa Cup of Nations warm up match on Friday.

Catalonia boasted five Barca players in its starting eleven squad, Xavi Hernandez, Cesc Fabregas, Sergio Busquets, Gerard Pique and goalkeeper Victor Valde and dominated the first half, but the Tunisians stood firm at the back.

The performance of the Carthage Eagles won them praise from coach of Catalonia, Dutch legend Johan Cruyff.

"We saw a good game. We had our chances to win in both halves, above all in the second, but we couldn't finish them off," Cruyff said.

"But this Tunisia team is pretty good. We were all surprised by how well they played."

The Africans relied on counter attacks and it worked perfectly for them in the end.

Tunisian coach Sam Trabelsi was in awe of the ability of the Spanish region' stars.

"I think that there are not many teams in the world like Catalonia, because they have great players with a lot of quality," said Tunisia coach Sami Trabelsi.

"I think that this team could win the World Cup."

Before this friendly Trabelsi' boys had beaten another Spanish regional team, Basque Country 2-0 in a friendly on Wednesday.

Regions such as Catalonia are allowed by Fifa to play friendly matches against full international sides but cannot feature in any official international friendlies.

Tunisia is preparing for the AFCON which is set to run between 21 January to 12 February in Equatorial Guinea and Gabon.

The Carthage Eagles are in Group C where they will face Morocco on 23 January, Niger on 27 January before facing the co-hosts Gabon on 31 January.
