Ivory refuse late release of Toures by Man City

Ivory Coast coach Francois Zahoui has turned down a 'difficult' but understandable request by Manchester City for the delayed departure of the Toure brothers to allow them to play in a Manchester derby, a FA Cup 3rd round clash on Sunday.

Kolo and brother Yaya Toure had been penciled to arrive in Ivory Coast on Saturday prior to the Ivory Coast Africa Cup of Nations squad's departure for a training camp in Abu Dhabi.

"Clubs know the rules," Zahoui told BBC Africa. "I'm expecting them [the Toures] for the Fifa deadline."

In terms of Fifa rules clubs are enjoined to release players for national team duties at least two weeks prior to the start of competitions like Africa Cup of Nations.

Robert Mancini had hoped that the Toure brothers would feature in a Manchester derby at Etihad Stadium in the FA Cup third round on Sunday, but the Italian will have to do without his two first team players for an entire month, beginning on Sunday.

Yaya and Kolo Toure are expected to play starring roles in the Elephants' quest to win the Afcon title this year, and in as much they are central to the ambitions of Man City, they are crucial for the realisation of the dreams of Ivory Coast.

The Afcon is due to take place between 21 January until 13 February in Equatorial Guinea and Gabon.

Man City are expected to miss the duo dring their less than a month's absence. Toure has been described by his Man City coach Mancini as irreplaceable given the role he has played in City's ascendancy to the summit of the Barclays Premier Soccer League log.

Brother Kolo has cemented his place in the starting eleven's heart of defence ever since returning from a six-months suspension.
