Vidigal names Angola"s AFCON squad

Lito Vidigal, coach of Angola, has announced a preliminary squad for the Africa Cup of Nations finals to be staged by Equatorial Guinea and Gabon between January 21 and February 13.

The  Palancas Negras' provisional squad of 26 players include veteran striker Flavio, who is now based in Belgium with Lierse, and former Manchester United striker Manucho Goncalves who is now on the books of  Real Valladolid of Spain.

The team also include Nando Rafael, a player who fled civil war in Angola as a child, once stayed in the Netherlands before finding his way to Germany, where he now turns out for Bundesliga side Augsburg.

A provisional squad of a total of eight strikers, boasts of many professionals based in Europe, mainly in former colonial masters Portugal, Cyprus, Germany and Belgium.

Angola, who hosted the last Afcon finals in 2010, rounded off their training programme in the capital Luanda on Wednesday and headed for Cabinda Province for the final round of their preparations for intriguing battles in Group B alongside Ivory Coast, Sudan and Burkina Faso.

The Palancas Negras have lined up a friendly match against Nigeria on 11 January, followed by another friendly with as yet to be confirmed opponents just before the tournament kicks-off.

Angola cancelled their plans to train in Brazil, opting instead for a home camp, beginning with the Luanda phase of the camp. During that first hase of the camp, Angola drew 1-1 with Cameroon, beat Zambia 1-0 and played goalless with Namibia, who are harbouring hopes of replacing Burkina Faso in Group B if CAS rules in their favour on Friday.
