Dickson Choto back in Europa league action

Zimbabwe's only player who remains in European club competition is Dickson Choto, who has made a timely recovery from the injury that saw him miss most of Legia Warsaw of Poland's Europa League group matches and the early league matches.

Choto, a big, experienced, strong and ball-playing central defender was out with injury between August and end of November and missed much of the opening league games for Legia in the Ekstraklasa and the clubs' exploits in the Europa league.

The 1.92 metres tall defender was injured during Legia's league match against Śląsk Wrocław on 21 August, a match which Legia went on to lose 1-2 at home when Choto left the field of play.

Choto was to be inactive between late August and early December, only returning to action during the weekend of 10-11 December. He was an unused substitute that day as Legia drew 0-0 at home against Cracovia Krakow.

The former Darryn T defender then played the full 90 minutes of a dead rubber against Hapoel Tel Aviv away in Israel in a Europa League group stages match, a match Legia lost 2-0. By that time, the Polish giants had already qualified comfortbaly for the last 16 of UEFA's second biggest competition.

Choto's return to action should be good news for Zimbabweans in general, and Warriors' coach Norman Mapeza in particular.

Mapeza will need to call upon all the experienced players that the country has who are dotted in Europe. Given his vast international experience, which includes UEFA Champions League and Europa League experience, Choto will be an invaluable addition to the squad in  the tricky fixtures the Warriors face in 2012.

Zimbabwe is due to take part in tough 2014 World Cup qualifiers in a group that includes African giants and six times AFCON title winners Egypt and Guinea, who recently knocked Nigeria out of the 2012 AFCON finals.

Big match players like Choto, Mike Temwanjira of FC Vaslui in Romania whose team unfortunately got knocked out of the Europa League, Musa Mguni of Terek Grozny in Russia and Noel Kaseke of Cyprus Champions Omonia Nicosia, are desperately needed for the upcoming World Cup and 2013 AFCON qualifiers.
