Lucky Mkosana joins MLS club Chicago Fire

Lucky Mkosana is a relatively unknown entity in Zimbabwean soccer, and is the latest Zimbabwean or African player to join United States of America's Major League Soccer, when the Chicago Fire selected him as the number 23 overall pick of the 2012 MLS SuperDraft on January 12.

Chicago Fire competes in the USA's topflight football  (MLS) which boasts the likes of legendary soccer stars like Thierry Henry now on loan with English premiership club Arsenal , David Beckham, Landon Donovan of LA Galaxy, currently on loan at Everton.

Bulawayo-born Mkosana was naturally pleased to have joined topflight football in the USA.

“No words can explain how happy I am,”  Mkosana is quoted as having said by the Dartmouth website..

“I feel blessed for this wonderful opportunity and want to thank my teammates, coaches, friends, family, and the Dartmouth community for their support,” he added.

Mkosana becomes the first player from Dartmouth to make it into the Superdraft for 2012, and overrally the third Dartmouth player in the history of the collegiate football club. Only Daniel Keat (2010) and Bobby Meyer (1999) are the other players to have been drafted by an MLS team before.

The Zimbabwean athlete scored 10 goals in 17 matches for Dartmouth in 2011. During the 2012 MLS Combine tournament, something akin to topflight trials for collegiate football players in the USA, Mkosana had an outstanding first game.

Appearing for the  adiPower (red), Mkosana came off the bench to score a goal, and set up the winner to beat Prime (green) 3-2. The player must have grown complacent as his performances thereafter did not replicate the storming outing he had in his first match.

There was no doubt in the minds of selectors that the 24-year old Mkosana has the talent to set the MLS alight this upcoming season (starting in April), if he continues to work hard.

At Chicago Fire, Mkosana will be joined by another Bulawayo born player, Mkokheli Dube, who swapped a New England Revolution jersey for a Chicago Fire one.

The move was just about time for a player affectionately called Kheli in the USA. Kheli's career was beginning to stagnate at New England Revolution and he was in need of a new challenge to get back to his best.
