Ivory Coast labour to a1-0 win over Sudan

The Ivorians haveDrogba to thank for rescuing three points for them against stubborn Sudan

The referee has blown his whistle to end the match between giants Ivory Coast and minnows Sudan to leave the match 1-0 in favour of the West Africans.

Didier Drogba scored in a first half ( 39th minute)which the Ivorians dominated up to a point.

The victory was by no means of an inspiring performance for a team touted as potential AFCON title winners.  Yet, at the end of the day, The  Elephants avoided the wake-up call that Senegal received a day earlier at the hands of Zambia. They collected three points, more importantly.

Sudan will be disappointed at coming out of the match without anything, but they were by no means embarrassed.

If anything, with better precision, they could even have punished the slow Ivorains on a number of occasions. Moutata's shot shaved the cross-bar,helped to the pole by keeper Boubacar just a minute before the break.

Many other opportunities were to be squandered by Sudan who really ran rings around the Ivorians in the middle of the park and in defence from the time Drogba gave them the opener, and the tempo was upped in the second half.

The Ivorians were to hold on until the final minutes, mainly relying on sporadic counter attacks, spearheaded by Arsenal attacking midfielder Gervinho.
