Zimbabweans & Warriors abroad: Nyoni shines

Last weekend many Zimbabweans were in action for their European clubs in various leagues. As is normal, the players met with mixed fortunes.

Ever green Vusa Nyoni picked up from where he left before the festive break in Europe. Nyoni and his Belgian Pro-League club Germinal Beerschot had to wake up from a slumber abd break rust which saw them being whacked 6-1 by Standard Liege on their return from the break last weekend. What a response the team gave against Honour Gombami's Cercle Brugge whom they beat 4-0 at home. Nyoni made it 2-0 in the 41st minute, after Netherlands' Sherjil MacDonald gave the Antwerp-based club a 1-0 lead. Beerchot completed the rout with further goals from double scorer Argentinian Hernán Pablo  Losada.

In Germany, Knowledge Musona was a second half substitute for TSG Hoffenheim as they failed to avenge their opening defeat to Hannover 96 and could only manage a 0-0 draw at the Wirsol Rhein-Neckar-Arena in Sinsheim. Musona was introduced in the 85th minute and the young man had too little a time to make an impact and rescue three points for his club. Hoffenheim sit eighth with 23 points from 18 games. They have maintained a top 8 position since the beginning of the season.

Noel Kaseke has been playing regularly for his club, Cypriot champions Omonia Nicosia who suffered only their second loss of the season after 17 games to second-placed Anorthosis who beat them 1-0 at home. Brazilian Evandro Roncatto scored for the visitors in the 83rd minute. Omonia, Anorthosis and AEL are all tied at 37 points in the Cypriot Division One, while UEFA Champions league revelation side APOEL FC are just a point away.

England has several Zimbabwean players plying their trade between the Championship level and League Two.

Former Zimbabwe international and captain Benjamin Mwaruwari was a 64th minute substitute as Portsmouth suffered a 2-1 defeat at Cardiff City on Saturday.

In League One,  26 year-old Zimbabwean midfielder Bradley Pritchard, of whom little is known back home, played for 90 minutes for League One log leaders Charlton Athletic in their 1-0 home win over third placed Sheffield United. Charlton are sitting on 60 points after 26 games and are still a game behind most of the League One teams. Second placed Huddersfield Town are exactly seven pooints behind Charlton, having played a game more.

Another Zimbabwean, 15-year old Brendon Galloway is on the books of fifth-placed Milton Keynes Dons in League One. The youngster is so highly rated that at only 15, he is already a first team squad member. He plays as an attacking midfielder. It is very interesting that no-one from Zifa has ever tried to make contact with many youths with Zimbabwean backgrounds dotted around the professional leagues in England.

Plymouth Argyle continued their impressive fight against relegation, but on Saturday needed Maxime Blanchard to rescue a point at home against second-placed Crawley Town by equalising in the 90th minute and see Plymouth sitting two places away from the bottom. The match ended 1-1. Onismor Bhasera had a decent match and as usual played the entire 90 minutes. The Warriors defender has been playing well ever since he recovered from the knee injury which kept him on the sidelines for much of last season.

In France, Ovidy Karuru came on in the 66th minute for US Bolougne to replace Loďc Damour in a 3-1 losing cause away at Tours on Wednesday.  Bolougne are now 15th on the log after 20 matches, with a further 20 games remaining before end of the season. The 23 year-old  Warriors midfielder played the entire match in Bolougne's 0-0 draw at home against Reims on 14 January.

Warriors attacking midfielder/striker Quincy Antipas in Denmark, forward Mike Temwanjira of FC Vaslui in Romania, central defender Dickson Choto and full-back Costa Nhamoinesu in Poland and striker Musa Mguni in Russia were all inactive as their league were inactive for much of January.

Kalmar FF new recruit Archieford Gutu is currently in pre-season training with his Swedish top league club who are believed to be camping in Spain at the moment. The topflight and other leagues in Sweden kick-off in March and are played between March and December.
