ZIFA appoint best man-Gumbo as caretaker

Mr. Rush, Gumbo is the acting Warriors coach following Mapeza"s suspension

The Zimbabwe Football Association made interesting appointment, apparently on a temporary basis for the national teams. Well tavelled and fairly successful coach Rahman Gumbo while Peter Ndlovu and Jaoirosi Tapera took over as under-age national team interim coaches.

Following the suspension of substantive Warriors coach Norman Mapeza this week, who has to clear his name against match-fixing allegations, ZIFA named Gumbo as interim coach for the Burundi Africa Cup of Nations 2013 qualifiers on 29 February.

On merit, there apears no better coach on the local front to fill the void left by the untimely suspension of Mapeza. Gumbo has a well-documented pedigree as a coach. He has won two titles with Highlanders in the recent past, achieved more titles on foreign soli in the Malawian and Botswana's B-mobile league with MTL Wanderers and Township Rollers respectively in recent years.

It is to be seen if Gumbo will afford a quick fix solution for the Warriors given the predicament he will find himself in, as he assumes a decimated Warriors call-up base.

Gumbo will have to deal with the reality that for the Burundi tie and probably other ties to come, he will not be able to call upon Warriors regulars like big and talented striker Nyasha Mushekwi, another striker Edward Sadomba, play-maker Ovidy Karuru, attacking midfielder Khama Billiat, central midfielder Willard Katsande, defenders Thomas Sweswe, Method Mwanjali, Zhainu Jambo, Daniel Veremu and Gilbert Mapemba, goalkeeper Washington Arubi.

Good news for Gumbo is that there is a wide selection pool out there among those Zimbabwean playes based abroad and locally who remain untainted by the Asiagate scandal and match-fixing allegations. Beezsports last week suggested the potential players available for suggestion.

In another development, ZIFA surprised many by appointing national soccer legend Peter Ndlovu as Under 23 coach, who will be assisted by Calisto Pasuwa. Having Peter in the set-up of any national team can only be good for Zimbabwean football given his playing pedigree in the past.

What is surprising for many is his choice over his deputy Pasuwa, a man who has been a coach for a longer time than Ndlovu who remains untested at this stage. Could it be that ZIFA wanted to give a chance to a person who is not involved with a club and also given the fact that Pasuwa will be leading a team in the demanding African Safari this year?

Another surprising appointment was that of Tapera, a director of football development at FC Platinum. Though Tapera might not be popular, he is credited with FC Platinum's qualification to the Premier Soccer League.
