Spotlight on Charlton's Zim-born Bradley Pritchard

Pritchard of Charlton Athletics in England. His talent is screaming for a Warriors call-up.

Zimbabwe has many young players who are plying their trade in England's professional leagues and non-leagues, and one such player whose talent screamed from the obscurity of a non-league division, the Conference North to attract the attention of former premiership side Charlton Atheltics, now in League One, is that of Harare-born Bradley Pritchard.

Born in Harare on 19 December 1985, the Zimbabwean, who is registered by his current club, Championship place-chasing League One log leaders Charlton using a Zimbabwean passport, began his English career at Conference North side Nuneaton Borough in 2006, and left the club when it was liquidated at the end of 2007/2008.

Pritchard joined local rivals to Nuneaton, Tamworth, for whom he was to score 4 goals from his midifield position between 2008 and 2010.

For the 2010/2011 season, the Zimbabwean midfielder played for yet another Conference side Hayes & Yeading United, making 46 appearances in one season and finding the net 14 times, a good return for a midfielder.

It was his talent showcased at Hayes& Yeading United that saw Charlton come knocking on his door for a signature in May 2011, just before the beginning of the current League One season.

Pritchard has started to establish himself in a star studded high-riding Charlton squad, leaders for the chase for a place in England's 2nd tier league, the Coca-Cola Championship where former Warriors captain Benjamin Mwaruwari turns out for Portsmouth FC.

During Charlton's last league match, a 1-0 away win against Exeter City, Pritchard played in the first eleven, and was substituted in the 89th minute.

Charlton are currently leading second-placed Sheffield Wednesday by 7 points in League One, with a game in hand, having had their match against Rochdale postponed. That gap can increase to 10 or 8 points if the log leaders are to win or draw their outstanding match.

On 9 January, Pritchard received rave reviews on the Charlton website page for his outstanding performance in an FA Cup third round tie against Premiership side Fulham.

"He may have made only his first league start of the season against Brentford only five days earlier, but Bradley Pritchard showcased his talents against Premier League Opposion on Saturday.

"The 26 year-old who was playing non-league football just eight months ago, impressed in the third round of the FA Cup against Fulham with his energy and passing alongside Danny Hollands in the middle of the park," the Charlton Athletics website praised Pritchard.

The 26 year-old Pritchard, who can play in central midfield, and whose strengths include passing and scoring crucial goals will prove to be an important addition to the Warriors, if Rahman Gumbo or Norman Mapeza decide to include the player for the 2013 AFCON qualifier against Burundi, or the 2014 World Cup qualifiers due to begin in June this year.
