Perfect KPL start for ex-champs Gor, Sony

A perfect start to the season is what most clubs would have loved, but while that went well for some, it was a case of woes for others.

It's still early for all clubs to sort their mistakes but the opening weekend of the Kenyan Premier League saw champions Tusker, Gor Mahia, Kenya Commercial Bank and Sony Sugar collecting maximum points.

Tusker had to come from behind to beat a tough fighting Nairobi City Stars 2-1 at the Nyayo Stadium on Saturday and coach Sammy Omollo will have to do something about his defence that was severally caught napping by City Stars striker Dan Sserunkuma.

The pint sized Ugandan forward opened the scores for City Stars but the champions, thanks to their experience managed to equalise through a Noah Abich penalty and a Joseph Mbugi goal.

"I can say today (Saturday) we were pressed hard by City Stars but I am happy we won," said Omollo.

"It’s a good start," he added.

Gor Mahia once again won the milk derby hammering Thika United 2-0 in Thika with goals from Duncan Makori and Hugo Nzangu while KCB registered a shock2-1 win over former champions Ulinzi Stars.

Collected point

It was a result the soldiers had not expected and coach Benjamin Nyangweso says it was a wake up call to them.

"We still have 29 matches to make amends," said Nyangweso.

K’Ogalo now shift their focus on the CAF Confederations Cup tie away to Ferroviaro de Maputo in the weekend.

Sony Sugar, playing at the Gussi Stadium walloped Mathare United 3-1 to top the standings on goal difference.

It was coach Zedekiah Otieno’s first match in charge of Sony Sugar after his move from Gor Mahia bench last December.

Newcomers Oserian and Muhoroni Youth had a taste of the league and left unscathed collecting a point each, Muhoroni holding Western Stima to a barren draw while Oserian playing to a 2-2 drwa with Rangers.

"The draw gives us some confidence," said Muhoroni coach Alfred Imonje.
