Kenya : Bright start for Gor in Thika as Sony hit United

Gor Mahia had a flying start to their 2012 Kenyan Premier League campaign, beating Thika United 2-0 in Thika on Sunday.

It was an epic season-opener for two teams sponsored by the same milk company, Brookside Dairy, the home team Thika endorsing "Brookside Milk" and the visitors the "Tuzo" brand. This clash has come to be known as the "Milk Derby".

Gor Mahia had the better of play in the opening minutes, their forwards looking confident. Newcomers Anthony Nyang’or and Hugo Nzoka supported regulars Duncan Makori and Moses Odhiambo well.

Their efforts were rewarded in the 33rd minute when Nyang’or’s cross was turned by Moses Odhiambo to Makori who struck home.

In the 61st minute Kenya midfielder Collins Okoth found Nzoka who headed Gor 2-0 up.

Rangers 2 Oserian 2

Rangers FC came back in the second half to force a 2-2 draw with league new comers Oserian FC at the Nyayo National Stadium.

Oserian got their opening maiden goal in the 21st minute when Daniel Seda scored from close range following a mix up in defence after Rangers’  Joseph Asuza failed to clear a harmless cross to stab the ball past Lawrence Webo, and before Rangers could settle Paul Odhiambo added the second goal seven minutes later to silence the Rangers fans.

KCB 2 Ulinzi 1

Ulinzi Stars, last season’s runners up, were surprisingly beaten 2-1 by KCB in a fast-paced match at the City Stadium. Jacob Kelly was the home teams hero after scoring a double his first goal in the 47th minute after a solo move from the left wing chipping the ball over Francis Ochieng’ in the Ulinzi goal. Ulinzi came back into the game when Munandi Mulinge taped in the equaliser.

Sony Sugar 3 Mathare United 1

Gusii Stadium hosted it’s first Premier League match with Sony Sugar beating the visiting Mathare United 3-1 in a one-sided encounter.

Sony, under former Gor tactician Zedekiah Otieno, have adopted the Gusii Stadium as their second home due to the ongoing renovations at their Awendo backyard.

Karuturi Sports 0 Sofapaka 0

Hosts Karuturi Sports held visiting Sofapaka to a barren draw at the Old Trafford Stadium in Naivasha.
