Warriors back in top 100, Zambia fly into top 50

Zimbabwe's Warriors moved a paltry three places up in the latest FIFA World rankings released by the world soccer governing body on Wednesday. In contrast, neighbours Zambia, bouyed by Chipolopolo's AFCON 2012 exploits, stormed into the top 50.

The Warriors, who were ranked 102 the last time around, gained three points, thanks to the gallant display of an under-strength and less prepared locally-based Warriors team that held Botswana to a goalless draw  away in Gaborone on 7 January.

Zimbabwe will be hoping for a good result against 143rd ranked Burundi when they meet in a 2013 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier away in Bujumbura on 29 February.

Meanwhile, Zambia's AFCON 2012 final triumph did not go unnoticed as Zimbabwe's northern neighours made a dashing rise, jumping from 68th to 43rd position, a massive 25- places move.

Chipolopolo claimed the sculp of higher ranked nations like Senegal, Ghana and Ivory Coast enroute to lifting the coveted AFCON title in Gabon's Libreville , a city wherein 25 Zambian soccer players and officials perished  in a 1993 air disaster.

In Africa, Ivory  Coast remain continent's top ranked nation despite losing 7-8 on penalties to Zambia during the AFCON 2012 final. The Elephants never lost, neither did they consider a goal through out the tournament. They have now gained a point and now sit on position 15.

South Africa have continued their steady decline, and moved down to 58  from  56. The Southern African giants will host the 2013 AFCON finals after the finals were taken away from war-ravaged Libya and awarded to them in a swap deal.

The North Africans were nonetheless awarded the rights to take over South Africa's 2015 rights to host the tournament.

Spain remained at the top of the rankings, while Germany have moved into second place ahead of now 3rd-placed Netherlands.

Denmark are doing very well and remain the 10th best ranked nation in the world. Romania are trying to make a recovery. They once enjoyed top 15 status in the world, but right now they have to  be content with gaining two places to now sit on position 52.
