Warriors' final 18 for Burundi

Mguni leads many new faces in the new-look Warriors squad that left Harare for Burundi on Sunday

The Zimbabwe senior national soccer team left Harare for Bujumbura, capital of Burundi enroute Johannesburg for the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier' first leg tie against the host nation on Wednesday afternoon.

Warriors delegation led by controversial Zifa Vice-President Ndumiso Gumede, left Harare International airport amid aplomb and fanfare, having been escorted by luxurious coaches offered by Lachelle Tours, new partners of the Warriors.

Sporting new designer suits, the delegation left Harare with 13 players who included six foreign-based stars, while four other South-Africa-based players were picked up at the Johannesburg Airport. Three more Europe-based stars.

The total breakdown of the final 18 squad is as follows; 6 Europe-based stars who include returnees Russia-based Musa Mguni and  Onismor Bhasera who plays in England, Sweden-based Archieford Gutu, Noel Kaseke based in Cyprus, Knoweldge Musona from Germany and Vusa Nyoni who plays his club football in Belgium.

Injured Quincy Antipas who plays in Denmark  and Poland-based Dickson Choto have been left out of the squad. Choto faced difficulties being released by his club Legia Warsaw who were playing onlylate afternoon on Sunday and thus could not be drafted into the final squad.

Botswana's B-Mobile league has contributed  2 players, defender Arnold Chaka  and midfielder Mandla Sibanda, while 5 players have been drawn from South Africa's ABSA premiership, the richest league in Africa, and seventh richest in the world, apparently.

The SA-based stars in the Warriors squad are possible captain Tinashe Nengomasha, Esrom Nyandoro, Terrence Mandaza, Tapuwa Kapini and Abbas Amidu. It is not clear what informed the exclusion of in-form Amazulu central defender Carlington Nyadombo.

While the Warriors enjoyed an immaculate send-off at home, their reception in Bujumbura was far from being a bed of roses. The team was checked into a sub-standard hotel which they rejected.

The Zimbabwe delegation's hosts were as late as 7pm last night making efforts to secure alternative accommodation acceptable to the Southern Africans.

Whether it is mind games the Burundis were playing or it was downright poor organisation skills, it remains unclear.

Three players, Kaseke, Musona and Nyoni will link up with the rest of the squad in Bujumbura  having connected directly to the Burundi capital from their European bases following their weekend commitments with respective clubs.
