Who is playing who in AFCON 2013 qualifiers this week?

Who is playing who in AFCON 2013 qualifiers this week?

Some strong African nations who agonisingly missed out on the chance to qualify for the Equatorial Guinea/ Gabon co-hosted African Cup of Nations 2012 finals have a chance to answer their critics in style by negotiating their way past tricky opponents on Wednesday in the first round of the limited AFCON 2013 qualifiers.

As CAF shifts from hosting the AFCON finals on even to odd years, a knockout basis, as opposed to a group or round-robin basis format of qualification has been preferred, given the time limitations.

African giants who failed to make it to 2012 AFCON finals include record holders Egypt, who will have to wait to play their first round match against tough opponents, the Central African Republic only on 15 June.

While everyone else begin the battle for South Africa 2013 this mid-week, Egypt's tie against CAR has been moved due to the recent political disturbances in the major cities and towns of Egypt, a revolution which swept aside long-time leader Hosni Mubarak.

Nigeria face a tricky assignment against fast improving and highly unpredictable Rwanda, with a first tie being played in Kigali, before the return leg during mid June. New Super Eagles coach Stephen Keshi has been quietly assembling a competitive squad after the disappointment of 2012.

Zimbabwe, despite suspensions of nearly 100 players due to match fixing inquiries which are yet to be completed, assembled a team a strong looking squad which boasts several European-based and South African-based stars.

While there is no doubting that the Warriors have depth, the country's undoing has always been poor preparations, even though ZIFA cannot really be blamed for the poor preparations this time around. The nature of the qualifiers which are played midweek, makes it an organisational nightmare for FAs.

South Africa, 2013 AFCON hosts, will try to keep fit by engaging 2012 Afcon finals flops Senegal in a friendly match at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Wednesday night.

Another match which could produce fireworks is the Gambia vs Algeria match. Gambia have been steadily developing, on the back of a thriving junior national team policy. If Algeria are not careful, they could be in for a huge surprise on Wednesday afternoon.
