Travel complications for Musona,Kaseke

Musona was stranded at the airport on Monday and could not fly into Bujumbura.

Zimbabwe's key striker, Germany-based Knowledge Musona and defender Noel Kaseke from Cyprus were by late last night still holed up at their bases after botched-up travelling arrangements which delayed their arrival in Bujumbura to join the rest of the squad.

Information available shows that Musona was inf act barred by a plane from boarding because he did not have, according to the plane authoprities, the requisite visa to enter Burundi and last minute re-arrangements by ZIFA will see the Hoffenheim striker only arriving in Bujumbura just six hours before kick-off.

“After the problem we had with his initial airline refusing to let him board the plane without a visa to Burundi, I have now spoken to both the player and the club’s manager and we agreed that he would now leave Germany this evening (yesterday) on Kenyan Airways and arriving tomorrow morning which should give him a few hours to rest before the match,’’ acting team manager Nyika Chifamba revealed.

While Musona's problems appear to have been resolved albeit very late, there remains confusion on the availability and participation of Kaseke in a match set to kick off at 15h30 at the Prince Louis Stadium in the downtown part of the capital.

There are conflicting reports emanating from the Zifa camp and the player's camp. The player, by early week, had ruled out his participation, while Zifa appears to be retaining hope that he will join camp this morning.

“I wanted to come to Burundi and play for my country. It is always an honour to don those colours, but I am hurt because there were complications with my invite. Honestly, Zifa ought to have done better,”  Kaseke told The Chronicle yesterday.

Yet the Warriors camp appears to be still expecting him to play a role in today's first leg of the 2013 AFCON qualifier. Rahman Gumbo, the Warriors' head coach is expecting both Kaseke and Musona and does not see much complication arising from their late arrival.

“I will have to see how we can fit them into the team because I have been working with these guys that are here.

"So I will first have a chat with the players when they arrive and see how best we can deal with it. But I must say it is not the first time this has happened in our football.

"We used to have Bruce Grobbelaar and Peter Ndlovu flying in on the day of the match, some times even just an hour or two before a match and they would still play well. Knowledge is still very young and I am sure he can rest well on the plane,’’ Gumbo told The Herald yesterday.

Gumbo appears to have a team capable of delivering goals even in the unlikely event that Musona fails to arrive as expected.

Strikers available in camp include Russia-based Musa Mguni, Terrence Mandaza who plays in the ABSA premiership in South Africa, other gifted strikers who prefer to attack from the deep, Charles Sibanda of Champions League participants FC Platinum back home and new Kaizer Chiefs of South Africa player Abbas Amidu.

Those strikers might be short on exposure to the rigours of Afcon matches, but they all have experience playing outside the borders of Zimbabwe, and should make use of that experience for the benefit of the team.

It is reported that morale in the camp is what it should be, despite the rough treatment the squad has reeived from the host nation. What matters now is how the players apply themselves on the field of play.
