Burundi beat Zimbabwe 2-1

A bigger part of this squad was missing in action in a 2-1 loss to Burundi

The Swallows of Burundi caused a stir in the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers as they grabbed a last minute winner against weakened Zimbabwe at Prince Loius Stadiumin Bujumbura on Wednesday afternoon.

Mavugo Lody gave the hosts the lead in the very first minute of play after the break following some sloppy marking by the Zimbabweans.

In the 60th minute, outstanding Warriors striker Knowledge Musona who has developed the habit of scoring in every Warriors match banged in a crucial away goal for the Zimbabweans to tie the match 1-1 at that point.

Poor concentration by the Zimbabweans was to return to haunt them again just in the last minute of a massive 5 added minute after 90 minutes of regulation.

Burundi lead 2-1 going into the 2nd leg between 15-17 June this year. This is a huge advantage for the Swallows and Zimbabwe will need better concentration for the 90 minutes of play in June to progress through to the next rounf.

Its advantage Burundi at the moment, and Zimbabwe will rue poor rythmn in their squad after nearly 100 players were suspended long before their cases are finalised in the match-fixing scandal that has rocked the country's  football.

With the benefit of hindsight, ZIFA will realise that their action, right as it may seem, was terribly ill-timed,and there are prospects that the matters may not be settled by end of March or even April.

The new team needs needed more time of settling down than the chaotic preparations that they were subjected to. It was indeed expecting the coach Rahman Gumbo and the squad players to grind out a result under the circumstances.
