FC Platinum in 8-2 aggr Champions League win

Zimbabwe's FC Platinum made headlines for the right reasons on Saturday following another emphatic victory in the CAF Champions League over Green Mamba of Swaziland, this time beating them 4-0 at Mandava Stadiumin Zvishavane to progress as possibly the biggest winners.

Having won the first leg 4-2 away in Swaziland, the Zvishavane-based platinum miners emerged 8-2 aggregate winners and have  not booked a date with Sudanese giants Al Merreikh who qualified for the first round proper without kicking a ball, having received a bye in the preliminary stages.

Despite boasting many years of experience in the Champions League, Al Merreikh should be qualking in their boots if they have closely followed events in Southern Africa between Green Mamba and FC Platinum.

In fact, Al Merreikh could be in for their biggest surprise ever since they began participating in this competition. FC Platinum might no experience in the Champions League as a team, but the team is a collection of individuals who are defintely gifted and experienced in international football on the continent.

The  presence of a coach, Rahaman Gumbo, who appears to have the pedigree in African football is another advantage that the Zimbabwean club has. Gumbo has won championships in Zimbabwe,Malawi and Botswana, but he has not really been successful in the Champions League as a coach.

In other Champions League matches played today, Orlando Pirates of South Africa have been knocked out by Angolan outfit Recreativo de Libolo on a 4-2 aggregate, after drawing 1-1 with the Angolans. The Bucs trailed 3-1 fromthe first leg at Orlando Stadiumin Soweto.

Another former African champions, Zamalek needed an Ahmed "Mido"Hossam goal just after the hour mark to emerge 2-1 victors over Tanzania's Young Africans  in the 2nd leg played Cairo. The first leg had  ended 1-1  in Dar-es-Salam a  fortnight ago.
