Uganda's URA face Djoliba in CAF championships

[Posted 05 Mar 2012]
[By Charles Malingha]

URA will no longer be judged by preliminary finishes in Africa’s biggest club competition, the Caf Champions League.

They could have lost 2-0 to Lesotho Correctional Service (LCS) yesterday and still progressed to the first round for their maiden time but Alex Isabirye’s side did just more than enough with a goalless draw at Setsoto Stadium to book a date with Mali’s Djoliba in the second round.

The two clash on the weekend of March 23-25 in Kampala before URA travel to Mali for the April 06-08 date.

Djoliba have reached the Caf Champions League second round on three occasions and made the quarter finals of the Confederations Cup in 2010.

"I’m glad we have completed that task," , said Isabirye, who set out with a cautious approach meant to protect the 3-0 victory in Kampala

"Now the tougher battle is next. We are going to West Africa and that side (Djoliba) is a tough one."

It was a night of joy and relief for the four-time Uganda Super League champions as they threw away the most quoted misfortune on on their back – never progressing from the preliminaries.

Wastefulness at Namboole two weeks ago had left Isabirye scratching his head but goals from skipper Manco Kaweesa, Sula Bagala and Vincent Kayizzi on the day were after all just enough to end the jinx.

For the three times they have represented Uganda in the competition, URA have stumbled at the first hurdle and had not scored a goal until the 2010 edition when Kaweesa, who should also be in the history books for the club having netted a record two times, scored one against Zanaco at Namboole. The team return this evening.
