Kenya advances to last stage of Fifa U 20 women world cup

Kenya advanced to the final round of qualification for the Fifa Under-20 Women’s World Cup in emphatic fashion after blowing away Zambia 4-0 at the Nyayo Stadium on Saturday.

The comprehensive victory gave Kenya a 5-2 aggregate win in the round and they will now face either Morocco or Tunisia for the right to represent Africa in the global finals in Uzbekistan later this year.

Full of running Sharon Jepkirui gave Kenya the lead midway through the first half before second half goals from Wendy Ann Achieng (73rd minute), captain Nedy Atieno (89th) and Mural Auma (90th +4) put the game away from the out played Zambians.

To be fair to the Zambian girls, they were reduced to 10 when Annie Chitembeya was red carded in the 52nd minute and later to nine after overworked goalkeeper Delly Lumwaya was withdrawn injured.

With all their substitutions exhausted Zambia were forced to switch in field player Anita Mulenga to goalkeeping duties for the final quarter of the match.

"We expected to win but to do it this way, I do not have words. This is the best team that can represent Africa at the World Cup and with the right support it can make it," a full of emotions Kenya coach, Florence Adhiambo, said.

"We decided amongst ourselves that we were ready to be removed from the pitch by an ambulance. We were ready to die for our country," Kenya captain and goal scorer Atieno said.

"We did not expect to lose by four goals. We expected to put in four past them. The team Kenya fielded is not the one that played in Zambia," she said.

The sparse home crowd got the start of their money’s worth when Jepkirui set up Atieno for a sliding effort home. Zambia held out for 0-1 half time score.

Then Kirui was hacked down in the box and Achieng stepped forward to dispatch the penalty kick home.

Disaster struck for Zambia when Chitembeya was sent off for an off the ball incident and Lumwaya was removed and taken to hospital with a serious looking neck injury.

Kenya took full advantage of their numerical advantage to score a splendid third goal. Auma completed the rout in the final moments of time-added-on with a sweetly struck half volley on the ran.
