Nikotemo’s Swift Wakefield Exit vs Trinity’s Long-Term Plans

Seth Nikotemo and Daryl Powell and Ste Mills contract talks

Seth Nikotemo has been released from his contract with Wakefield Trinity on compassionate grounds, returning to Australia after just 29 appearances for the club. The 22-year-old back-rower, who last featured for Trinity on June 28, departs with immediate effect following a family matter that required his presence back home.

Both the club and head coach Daryl Powell confirmed Nikotemo’s exit on August 14. Powell explained that the situation developed rapidly, stating, “He had an issue back at home that he needed to go and look after. It was a real quick one and we really wanted to look after Seth and make sure everything was all right. As soon as he got back home it was a situation where he needed to stay really.”

Nikotemo arrived at Belle Vue ahead of the 2025 season, joining a club that had just returned to Super League. He quickly became a fixture in the Trinity squad, making 29 appearances and scoring eight tries during his time in West Yorkshire. His contract had been due to run until the end of the 2027 season, but the family situation prompted the club to grant his immediate release.

Club and Teammates Respond

Director of Rugby Ste Mills spoke on behalf of Wakefield Trinity, stressing the club’s approach to player welfare. “As a club we want to wish Seth all the best back home in Australia. Seth was an extremely well liked and valuable member of our squad and it has been amazing to see him flourish over the last two years. As always here at Wakefield Trinity though, we put family first so we have fully supported Seth’s decision to return back home to Australia.”

The release statement also extended best wishes to Nikotemo’s partner Jess and his family. Powell said the player was coping as well as possible: “I spoke to him the other day and he’s OK, he’s cracking on. I wish him all the best for his future.”

Regarded as a strong prospect on his arrival, Nikotemo became a popular member of the squad and showed steady improvement during his time at the club.

Career Interrupted

Nikotemo’s time in England ends abruptly while Wakefield are building a squad for sustained Super League competition. Trinity are navigating a challenging campaign, and his departure leaves them weighing their options in the pack for the rest of the season and beyond.

His next move in Australia has yet to be confirmed. The timing affects Wakefield’s forward depth as the 22-year-old turns his attention to family matters.

Wakefield’s decision puts personal circumstances ahead of contract obligations. Changes to a squad can also influence rugby competition value assessments during a season. Elsewhere, uncertainty also surrounds fixtures such as the Italy vs England Six Nations matchup.

Nikotemo leaves Wakefield after 29 appearances and eight tries, with his immediate focus now on his family in Australia.
