East Zone storm into Duleep Trophy semis with record innings win

East Zone thrashed North East Zone by an innings and 210 runs in their Duleep Trophy quarter-final at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, sealing a semi-final place with a mountain of runs and two five-wicket hauls.

The knockout contest was effectively decided in barely two sessions. North East Zone had East Zone under pressure at 25 for 2 and again at 128 for 5, but Shahbaz Ahmed and Sudip Kumar Gharami turned the match with centuries that transformed a recovery into a procession.

Here is how the main numbers stack up from this quarter-final demolition:

East Zone storm into Duleep Trophy semis with record innings win
Player Batting (Runs) Bowling (Wickets) Key Impact
Shahbaz Ahmed 167 3 (1st inn) Career-best, rescued East, broke NEZ partnership
Sudip Kumar Gharami 146 – 185-ball rescue act
Abhijit Sarkar – 5 (1st inn) Triggered NEZ collapse
Anukul Roy – 5 (2nd inn) Finished the job, unplayable spin

Shahbaz joined Gharami with East Zone in trouble, then the pair took control. Shahbaz made 167 from 244 balls, with 17 fours and four sixes, while Gharami hammered 146 from 185 balls, including 25 boundaries and a six. Their stand drove East from crisis to 467 in 112.5 overs.

Gharami’s dismissal did little to slow East Zone. Shahbaz carried on and pushed the total beyond North East Zone’s reach.

North East Zone buckled under the scoreboard pressure. Abhijit Sarkar tore through the top and middle order with 5 for 20 in 9.5 overs as North East Zone, 78 for 3 at one stage, collapsed to 111 all out.

There was no relief after the follow-on. Mukesh Kumar struck first under overcast skies, while Mohammed Shami beat the outside edge with the new ball without reward. Anukul Roy then took over, bowling from around the wicket and varying his pace to claim 5 for 37 as wickets fell in clusters.

Shahbaz added a wicket in the second innings after his batting heroics, while Ishan Kishan took a crucial catch behind the stumps. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s double strike in a single over accelerated North East Zone’s collapse, and a last-wicket stand of 39 only postponed the finish.

North East Zone were dismissed for 146 in their second innings. Akash Chaudhary and Pheiroijam Jotin offered resistance in a ninth-wicket partnership, but Roy’s arm-ball finished the job, clean bowling Chaudhary before having Jotin caught behind.

The final numbers tell a story of total domination:

  • East Zone: 467 all out
  • North East Zone: 111 & 146 all out
  • Margin: East Zone win by an innings and 210 runs

Shahbaz’s 167 anchored the contest, while Sarkar and Roy delivered the five-wicket hauls that ended North East Zone’s challenge. East Zone move into the semi-finals after one of the most comprehensive wins of the quarter-final stage.
